As the first spin-off of its kind, Pokémon Legends: Arceus introduces a lot of new things, from new catching mechanics to new battle sequences. It even has features you’d never find in a generational Pokémon game like crafting and hand-to-hand combat. But do these new things affect gameplay length? The answer is yes.

Unlike modern Pokémon games, which can be completed in less than 30 hours, Pokémon Legends: Arceus needs around 30 hours to finish the main story quest without rushing. However, with enough exploring and side questing, the main game can take up to 40 hours. Even then, there’s still much to be done post-credits, including new missions and expansive endgame content.

The Hisuian Pokédex is made out of 242 Pokémon, too, so you’ll need to work for it if you want to complete it as well. Catching Pokémon in the game will also require some action skills, so those who aren’t used to this type of gameplay might also find the game more challenging, leading to longer playtimes. Still, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a refreshing and exciting take on the franchise—you’re guaranteed to have fun either way.
