Out of the many sets of collectibles available for players to find in the world of Horizon Forbidden West, the Black Boxes offer an extra bit of lore. These are the last recordings of the soldiers who fought off the Faro Plague in order to give Zero Dawn enough time to make GAIA fully operable. Players can find the collector, Untalla, for these Black Boxes at The Memorial Grove in Tenakth lands.
No Man’s Land Black Box
This first black box can be found No Man’s Land near the top of the closest clifftop. It’ll be in the top half of a plane behind a powered door. Aloy will need to pry the door open in order to find the Black Box and a green level crate.
The Whitewatch Peaks Black Box
Southwest of Plainsong, players can find this Black Box up the top of a small cliff. It’ll be in a cramped corner filled with debris. Players will need to use the pullcaster to access this Black Box.
Jagged Deep Black Box
Players cannot access this one until they receive the rebreather from Poseidon’s main quest. It’s underwater in the far southern end of the neutral lands covered by the Utaru. Pry the door open in order to reach the Black Box.
Promontory Black Box
Northeast of Plainsong, players can find this Black Box locked behind the Metal Flower’s vines. To open up this area, players will need to gain the Vine Cutter from the main quest Seeds of the Past. Players will need to find an energy cell in the grass to power the upper cabin area of the shredded plane.
Bleeding Mark Black Box
Far north of Scalding Spear, players can find Bleeding Mark. East of the nearest Hunter Ground, players can see the top half of the plane embedded in the cliffside. Use the pullcaster to jump up there, pry the door, and the Black Box will be just inside.
The Stillsands Black Box
Out northwest of The Stillsands, players can find this Black Box inside of a plane cabin blocked off by a metal flower’s vines. In order to get the vine cutter, players will need to complete the Seeds of the Past main quest.
The Memorial Grove Black Box
The Memorial Grove is introduced near the middle of the main story, and players gain access to a lot of trade and interesting characters over time through exploring and communicating. At the underside of the tail end of the plane, players can use the pullcaster to pull themselves inside. It’ll be just past the door Aloy can pry.
Salt Bite Black Box
In the small encampment of Salt Bite, players can find this Black Box, hidden within one of the structures. It’ll be in a plane cabin that has been turned into a shelter. Aloy will need to open the vent at the far back part of the interior. Once done, players will find the Black Box among several other Legendary level supplies.
The Raintrace Black Box
This Black Box is out in The Raintrace between two Rebel Camps. Players will need the vine cutter from the main quest Seeds of the Past in order to reach the cabin of this plane. Cut the metal flowers vines to find the energy cell. Then bring the energy cell back to the other side of the plane and power the door to reach this Black Box.
Bonewhite Tear Black Box
Far West of the Bulwark, players can find this Black Box up in the mountains. There will be a small campsite. Between the shelter and the stash, players can find the energy cell they need to power the door of the plane cabin just past the camp. Powering the door will allow players to reach the Black Box.
Stand of the Sentinels Black Box
This Black Box can be found on the rocky part of the shore, north of Thornmarsh. It’ll be in the far back end of the plane. Players simply need to pull the crate out of the tail of the plane in order to reach the Black Box.
Isle of Spires Black Box
In the northern section of the Landfall island, players can find this Black Box. This one is super easy in comparison to all the other Black Boxes, there are no weird obstacles to get past. The plane will be crashed in a river, and the black box is sitting outside of the plane on a mossy cluster of rocks.
Once all of the Black Boxes are collected, players can bring them back to the collector at The Memorial Grove to trade them in. Untalla will trade players different uncommon, rare, very rare, and legendary machine parts for each of the Black Boxes. This includes a Frostclaw Circulator, Stalker Circulator, Frostclaw Sac Webbing, Large Machine Core, Dreadwing Metal Fang, Slitherfang Earthgrinder, Tideripper Tail Fin, Luminous Brainstem, Scorcher Scanning Ear, Stormbird Storm Cannon, Thunderjaw Tail, and Tremortusk Tusk.
After claiming all of these prizes, players will lastly receive the legendary Blastsling of the game, Wings of the Ten. This Blastsling starts off with three ammo types, two different types of explosive, and the third is an adhesive. Without any upgrades, it has the perks of 5% Critical Hit Chance and 15% Critical Hit Damage, as well as three open coil slots. Up to five coil slots can be unlocked as well as three more perks. These are the 15% Overdraw Damage, 15% Close Range Damage, and 2% Instant Plasma Blast Chance.
